Toph Bei-Fong attempted, once again, to cover her ears with her pillow, trying to block out the sound of someone knocking on her door. Well, not really knocking, since it sounded more like the person was slamming her fist into the door every five seconds. The twenty six year old woman eventually gave up and got out of bed, a very angry look on her face.
"Who is it?!" she yelled, walking down the stairs in her white shirt and green shorts. It was the middle of the night, and someone was banging on her door. She wasn't a stranger to waking up in the middle of the night, no, there were a few times where she had to jump out of bed, put on her armor and rush out of her house to take care of a situation involving the police. But usually, she received a call from her Lieutenant, warning her of the situation. And right now, she didn't get a call- just someone banging on her door in the middle of the night- which made her very, very angry.
Reaching for the handle, she opened the door, glaring at the person outside, not even recognizing the heartbeat. "I swear, if this isn't an emergency, I'm going to make you go through so much pain, you'll wish you had never been born!"

Barely standing in Toph's unlit doorway, half-hunched over and accompanied by the soft dripping sounds and harsh, metallic scent of blood as it slowly fell and pooled onto the front steps of Toph's house, was August.
The twenty-year-old man clearly qualified as an emergency, and already wished he'd never been born. Blood soaked into every fiber and stitch of his clothing and was collecting in a puddle beneath his feet. The bloodstained clothes themselves were little more than rags by this point, torn up as if he'd walked through a storm of razor blades before arriving at the house, and flapping restlessly in the night air. The array of swords that were his pride and joy were gone from their sheathes, some of which were themselves missing as evidenced by the severed straps still clinging to his back. Even his heartbeat and his breathing were unnaturally slowed as he grasped desperately at every second, minute, and hour of life left in his body
After a moment or two, something else equally shocking became apparent. August was clutching a tiny bundle of cloth tight to his chest, oddly free of the scent of blood. A bundle of cloth that suddenly began to stir and cry.
"Hey Sis! Surprised to see me?"

"... Blabberbrother?"
A brief look of happiness flashed in Toph's face. It had been four or five years since she last saw August. His last visit was when she opened the Republic City Police Force, and he was there to celebrate with her. He never said a word about what his new job was, but then again, Toph didn't really care to ask- she just knew he would return one day so they could visit a restaurant and talk about what happened to them in the past years. What she didn't knew is that he would return like this, and so the sudden look of happiness was replaced by one of complete despair.
"What the..." she muttered. "What the heck happened to you?" Without waiting for an answer, like usual, she walked over to him, wincing as her bare feet touched the pool of blood on her doorway. "How did you get like..." Resisting the urge to throw her hands up in the air and just yell out at her brother, Toph placed an arm around his chest, and guided him into the house. "Come on, get inside! We need to... fix you. I know who can help."
As she guided August towards the couch (and mentally thanked Alicia for insisting that she should have a couch), urging him to sit on it, another hand already reached for a nearby table, where the phone was located. It was an old model phone (well, old for August, anyway), but Toph had memorized certain numbers, thanks to the ticks the phone emitted. "Tell me what happened! No, wait, don't talk! It'll be bad for your injuries! What are your injuries?! Don't stop talking! It'll keep you awake!" Toph said, one hand on the phone, dialing up a number, and another one on August's shoulder, pushing him down the couch.

August raised an eyebrow as his sister uncharacteristically contradicted herself and blabbered on as much as she often accused him of doing. Ultimately, he decided that her latest set of orders was the most important and started to relate his story. He knew he was in no real danger of passing out since his abilities had already kept him moving when he should have given in to shock, but he listened to her out of habit by now.
"I've been traveling around the Multiverse to different worlds as a sort of freelance hero. Saving Princesses, slaying monsters, going through incredibly long series of item bartering to gain magical lampshades of no use to me and of course...escort missions."
the injured man frowned slightly at that last part.
"Anyway, I took on a job in Soul Eater world, the place where my shapeshifting powers come from. I was supposed to go along with this other Meister and Weapon pair trying to wipe out a Coven of Witches, powerful supernatural beings who are mostly evil. We took down a lot of them but in the end, the very last one wound up being far far more powerful than we expected. She had spells that just cut the space around you away and destroyed it. No, it was more like she was just...slicing chunks out of reality itself and destroying them..."
August caught his breath and continued speaking, tears began streaming down his face and his hands clenched into fists as he remembered the horrific futility of his actions that day.
"We were able to kill her permanently, but doing so cost me every last one of my swords, and by the end, I wound up like this. But the worst part is...the worst part is....they died Sis! I was supposed to be protecting them and I let them die!!! I looked them both in the eyes as the life went out of them and...they made me promise....promise to look after their baby. I...I don't know why, maybe the pain and blood loss made them delusional but...I promised them. So I went all the way back to Death City right away, and I found the baby, but I didn't know what to do and I wasn't sure how long I would stay alive, so I changed him and then I brought him here."
At this point it became obvious that what August was holding was, in fact, a baby. Still very much alive, squirming sleepily and yet miraculously clean despite August himself bleeding so heavily. The Demon Sword's tears of frustration and despair were just now beginning to stain the clean, white blanket the infant was wrapped in.

Toph stared at the floor, listening to August's story. Her expression changed as she heard the story, going from sadness to surprise, her hand still holding the phone. She slowly moved her other hand to touch the baby, and at first, it seemed like she hadn't seen a baby before in her life. Well, that was partly true. She had seen a baby, but not one being held by her injured brother.
"Well..." she said, trying to smile. "How can you keep your promise looking like that? I'll call someone that can help us." Toph turned to the phone, and began to dial the number again.
------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, in a house on Republic City, the Noelles slept. The family composed of ex-travellers, a boy and a girl whose identity as an Avatar was a secret to everyone but her family and close friends had been visiting Republic City for the past few days. John, the father, worked on a power plant in Gaoling that belonged to Falkonian Enterprises, the corporation responsible for some of Republic City's biggest innovations and Falkon, the owner, had just called John for an important meeting about maintenance and "things like that"- so the family used that opportunity to visit Republic City and spend some time with old friends.
However, the phone right next to John and Alicia's bed began to ring, waking up Alicia, who proceeded to cover the ear of her 7-year old boy, Qiang, who was currently sleeping in their bed, with one hand, and nudge her husband with the other. "It's your turn", she said in a half-sleepy tone, "Pick it up before the children wake up."
-------------------------------------
Tapping her foot, Toph gritted her teeth, groaning the words "come on, pick up, pick up", before giving August a half-glance half-glare. "Blabberbrother, keep talking. You made a promise, and you're going to keep it. Tell me more about the couple that was with you. Don't try to sleep."

John nodded and rolled out of bed. He sighed, went to pick up the phone, whispering into it to avoid waking the family.
"This is John Noelle. Who are you and why are you calling so late at night?"

"Stabby." Toph said, not trying to show any emotion through her voice. "No time to talk. Blabberbrother just showed up. He's bleeding, he's injured, he needs help, and he has a baby in his hands. A baby that just lost his father and mother. I need you to go get me Sugar Queen- she's staying at Snoozles house, you know the one, near the Council- and get here right now. I need both of you here."

"...I'm on my way. Put pressure on the wound and for Krib's sake keep him talking."
John ran back to the bed and got dressed, taking the Master Pass from his suitcase. He nudged Alicia awake and spoke into her ear.
"Honey, get dressed. Toph needs us to go get Katara. August is hurt and she can help."
At that, he ran into the closet holding the Master Pass aloft as Qiang rolled over and nuzzled into his pillow.
A few blocks away, John stepped out of the alley and knocked on the door of Councilman Sokka's house. He was obviously pretty tired as he sighed.

"His parents were surprisingly kind people, a little rough around the edges though. I'd met them before when I was training in Shibusen. The other students all loved them and I can't say I didn't feel the same, so it was an easy decision to help them on a mission. I never would've made it out of there alive if they weren't there with me, that witch would've torn me apart. They'd just had a kid and they were thrilled about it, this was going to be their last assignment before they retired to raise him. Stupid! I should've recognized retirement tropes when they were invoked and then this never would've happened!!"
He stared at the bundled up infant that he'd been entrusted with, and the picture it formed brought an image to his mind. Another night from another man's memories mixed with his own, and another child, from another world, replaced this one. something solidified in him. He would protect this child, raise him to be great, to be a hero better than August could ever be, someone worthy of his parents sacrifice. But...none of that would matter if he didn't live through the night, and then who would look after the baby?
"He looks so small and fragile, and they gave him to me. I couldn't even protect them, but they trusted me with their baby. I...I did my best so far, changed him and kept him away from the blood, wrapped him up so he'd be warm. I didn' know anything at all about protecting a baby...but....it was in my shard. Did you know that? The guy in my shard knew some things about babies...more than me anyway.
He sighed in relief when he heard that it was John and Alicia that Toph had called. They would know what to do, would make this alright...somehow. It was an irrational, immature thought, a child's faith in his parents, but blood-loss was affecting his thinking and he knew it.
"See, little guy, everything'll...be alright. We picked a realy good doorstop to drop on."

"Sure thing, honey." Alicia mumble, hugging the pillow, and promptly forgetting her husband's orders. "I'll get the meat."
--------------------------------------
The door to Sokka's house slowly opened, revealing Katara, still wearing her normal clothes and the reason was obvious. Apparently, she had been so focused on doing something, that she ended up sleeping on somewhere that wasn't her bed- and that could be seen thanks to her messy hair and wrinkled clothing. She mumbled a few words before glancing at John with one half-open eye. "Oh, it's just you, John. Can't Falkon wait until the morning? I don't know if I'll be able to wake Sokka up for another emergency meeting."
She turned her head, glancing at her brother, who was sleeping on the sofa with a wide open mouth, his body partly covered by a blanket, and multiple papers lying near his hand.
---------------------------------------------------
"Don't worry, Blabberbrother, help is on the way." Toph said, kneeling besides her brother, and touching his chest, trying to find the wound. Realizing that there were multiple wounds, she proceeded to place one hand on his cheek, and the other on his chest. "Look at me. Don't sleep. Tell me about this witch... what did she do to you? Your entire body has injuries!"

John was clearly panicking as he put a hand on Katara's shoulder, obviously distressed as he held up the Master Pass.
"This isn't about Falkon, it's August, he's hurt bad and he's at Toph's house."
Gaoh-Liner pulled into the street behind him, torches on either side of the tracks dimmed and the roar muted as it came to a stop.
"Now get in the magic crocodile."

August refocused his eyes, staring at Toph in an attempt to stay awake.
"She had...some kind of spatial magic. She cut away at the space in front of her or obliterated it or something. If you got caught up in it, pieces of you that got hit just...vanished. She never got a clean hit on me...but her damned magic ate my swords.
Every time she grazed me, the skin just...disappeared. Lucky for me I didn't let her get me with anything worse than a flesh wound...or...a whole lotta flesh wounds. Even when she missed though, all this air would come rushing in next to where she cast her spells. It would come in and be really sharp, like blades but without metal since it was moving so fast.
When she grazed you directly it didn't hurt that bad since it happened so quick, but when the wind came in it hurt like hell. Had to shut out the pain and keep going. None of us were prepared, we didn't think someone like that would be there. She was...a monster.
I think she kept missing on purpose so we'd get lots of smaller, painful wounds. She kept laughing the whole time, right up until I killed her. She came in close, to gloat, like a lot of the classic bad guys do, really textbook, and I shot a bunch of blades out, right into her. I guess she didn't know I was a Weapon."
He grinned up at Toph, but it was more like a grimace of pain.

Katara stared at John with the same half-open eyes, and quickly closed the door. Silence reigned on the street as John could clearly hear a slap followed by hurried footsteps. The door opened again, revealing Katara, now putting on her coat.
"Alright, I'm not dreaming. Tell me, what else do you have up your sleeve, John?"
------------------------------------
Toph couldn't help but smile. "You really haven't changed, have you? Here I am, settled down and helping to run the police, and you're out there, living your life, going on adventures every single day, like before." She slowly moved her hand to another wound, trying to apply "pressure" to it. "The amazing metal brothers. And sometimes I keep wondering which one of us did the right thing: me or you."

"I've met a centuries old spirit of deception, peace, and celebration. He gave me a really nice chalice."
John said as he helped Katara up onto the train and headed to the cabin, revving the engine.
"I'm sorry to wake you, it's just, he's my son and all..."
Outside the windows of the train, there was a desert with an unusually colorful sky like an Aurora. They whizzed over a bridge as tracks lined with torches separated from the ones on the ground and Gaoh-Liner gave a roar as it rumbled to a stop.
John rushed out of Toph's closet and over to August, already slotting medals into his driver.
"August, son, are you alright?!"

August looked over at John as he burst into the room.
"Hey Dad. Well....I've looked better, but i've felt worse. The baby's okay, right? It'd be really dumb if I came all this way with injuries like this and the kid i'm protecting wasn't okay. I...sort of messed myself up."
He seemed notably calmer and more focused with John in the room.
The infant in question was once again sleeping, apparently not bothered by the comings and goings of people or the smell of blood filling the room.

At first, Katara seemed surprised due to the fact she just stepped out of a magic crocodile into the middle of Toph's house, but after noticing how badly injured August was, she quickly got to work. As Toph stood up, cradling the infant in her hands, Katara returned from the kitchen with a bowl filled with water. She set it down near August, and immediately turned to John.
"Take care of all this blood, John, there should be a mop or something in the kitchen." she said dryly, and then turned to August. "August, I need to see your injuries. Remove or roll up your clothes so I can check on them."
"And stay awake." Toph said, the baby sleeping in her hands. She sat besides August and held his hand. "If you sleep, I will slap you."

John had run off to get the mop before returning and beginning to clean the blood off the floors.
"It's going to be alright, Augie. I didn't want to be a grandfather so soon, but that's okay, I'm sure everyone will be happy to see you."

August frowned, unable to move much more than that without the risk of messing up the healing process.
"He's not really my kid. But...his parents trusted him to me. So I guess at the moment I'm the closest thing he's got, huh? I mean, I don't know the first thing about taking care of a kid, and i'm too young for the job! Big Sis is like six years older than me and she doesn't have a kid yet!"
Now that he knew he wasn't going to die, he was starting to worry about the future.

Toph's reaction to "she doesn't have a kid yet" was a mix between a gasp, a frown, a glare and a mumble, followed by a blush. They had already removed August's shirt, jacket and shoes (in a process that was quick, but at the same time, complicated), and Katara was already hard at work, bending a considerable amount of water around her hands. August had already been healed by a waterbender in the past, but that was a small injury. This time, there were injuries all over his chest, arms and hands.
As the glowing water floated over the first of many injuries, August could already feel the weird sensation that was being healed with water. At first, it felt like the injured part was being submerged in hot water. But after a few minutes, the water cooled down, and the injury was slowly healed. "Right. I'm... closing your wounds." Katara said slowly, not taking her eyes off her hands. "But you'll still need to go through a few more healing sessions with me before getting back to action. In other words: no running, jumping, fighting, climbing, you get the idea. Toph?"
"Huh?" Toph asked, taking her attention off the baby for the first time in quite a while.
"You're going to need to take care of him. Make sure that he rests and eats a lot. Also, you're going to have to change his bandages, the usual stuff."
"I would love to, Sugar Queen, but let me remind you, I have a job here. A very important one."
"Unless John can extend his... business trip so he can stay with August, you're going to have to make that sacrifice." Katara replied, giving her a quick glare. "Also, someone needs to take care of that baby."

"You actually look pretty motherly, holding him like that, Sis; could barely even take your attention off of him. You sure you don't want to take him instead?"
August's tone of voice was clearly teasing, even if he couldn't show it via adjustments in body language and positioning as much as he normally would.
"Anyway, I guess he's my responsibility for now, since I brought him here, even if I really deserve a day or two off of my feet. But I guess I could use the advice and the help."

"Shut up if you still want to keep your mouth." Toph replied with a glare.
Katara sighed, moving to another injury. "Maybe you could ask for some external help?"
"Yeah..." Toph said, raising an eyebrow. "That sounds like a good idea. Stabby can take care of Blabberbrother during the morning, and I can ask Hawky to take care of him during the afternoon. And at night, I'll take care of him. Unless there's some emergency, at which point, I'm sure Ms. Stabby wouldn't mind popping up to look over him."
"Sokka has to work until the Council shuts down for the evening, so if you have to do something important at night, I'm sure he can stay here and cook something for August." Katara commented, still focused on the injury.
"Plus, Stabby and Hawky already had babies." Toph said, smiling as the baby grabbed her fingers with its tiny hands. "They can help you with advice. I could never take care of this little guy- kids are just not my thing. I like to have a little bit of freedom, you know?"
|
|
|
Post by dblade26 on Aug 10, 2012 12:22:45 GMT -5
"Yeah, and now whatever freedom I have is pretty much dead too, right?"
He grinned at the way the baby grabbed at Toph's fingers just as soon as she insisted she was no good with kids and noticed that Toph smiled a little too, but decided he did want to keep his mouth attached to his face after all.
"Jeez, you guys are treating me like i'm completely helpless just because I lost one fight, like i'll keel over and die if you leave me alone for a while..." He winced mid-sentence as his wounds were being healed "Though...I guess i'm not in any condition to care for a baby by myself, at the moment."

John put the mop down and sat on the edge of the couch near August's head.
"Hey, I'm just worried my son's not going to be able to make it to dinner this week. Qiang's been asking me about you all week, you know, and Zhi always worries about you, even if she won't admit it. You're just as tough as me or Alicia."

August smiled, looking less pained just from hearing that.
"You know I'll always make it home. I promised I would when I started this whole adventuring thing. I might just...need to find my cane to get over there this week. Besides, if I'm gonna be serious about taking care of this little guy, he deserves to meet the family."
Things were definitely going to be different from now on. But that didn't mean things would be bad. Besides, he had a caring family to help him out.
"So tell them not to worry. I'll still be there this week, as long as I'm allowed to bring a plus-one."

"You have to understand, August." Katara said, bending the water back into the bowl and standing up. "That I can't heal you with a snap of fingers. If I wanted to heal all of your wounds right now, I would have to make a week-long healing session, without intervals. It's best to divide that week-long session into several daily sessions."
"Then it's settled. He's staying here." Toph said. "And I'm not taking no for an answer. We'll take turns. Sometimes I'll take care of him, sometimes Stabby will do it... I can call Hawky and Snoozles to help."
"That seems like a plan. I'll return tomorrow at night." she said, and then gave a sharp glance towards John. "Not in the middle of the night, you hear me? During dinner time."
"Right, right. But right now, Blabberbrother, you and this little guy need to sleep." she placed the baby in Katara's arms, and slunged one of August's arms around her shoulder, helping him stand up. "I'll wash your clothes, and you'll get them back tomorrow. Now stop complaining and come with me- we'll put some bandages on you and then send you off to sleep."
---------------------------------------------------
After his chest was covered with bandages protecting the wounds, August was sent off to sleep, and Toph had ordered him to rest "or else I'm going to make you work for me for an entire week". The next morning, August woke up to the unusual sounds of metalbending. Toph had given him his bed, and he would find out that the baby's clothes were changed, and he was now sleeping on a cradle (August would recognize it as the cradle that belonged to Qiang a few years ago) right next to his bed. And right in front of the bed, was Toph, who was currently putting on her green tiara, the long black hair now much more organised and contained.
"Oh, good, you woke up." she said. "I was about to do that, but I didn't want to do it without waking the baby up." She opened her closet, and turned to face August. With just a flick of her wrist, her police armor flew off the closet, attaching itself to her body. "I'm going to work now, Ms. Stabby should be coming here soon. Stabby has to do something regarding Hawky's corporation, so he's kinda busy. Your clothes are over there on that chair." She pointed towards a chair near the cradle, and indeed, his shirt and shoes were there, completely clean- and he could also notice a few extra clothes John left there. "You want something else?"
---------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, in the Noelle household, the entire family was on the move. John had been called by Falkon for another impromptu meeting, and Alicia had decided to take the kids while she was going to take care of August. As she placed even more food into a basket, Zhi, her 11-year old girl, lazily played with her cup of water.
"I don't get why we have to visit August, Mom. Can't I have a free day? I wanted to see the Republic City Museum!" she said, a look of boredom on her face.
"He's your brother, and he's injured. That's why we're going to take care of him. Now show a bit of respect and get ready, because we're leaving soon." she placed another fruit in the basket, and sighed, before yelling. "QIANG! We're leaving in five seconds! Get down here NOW!"

Qiang, seven years old, had thought about taking his wooden sword along so August could teach him some things. Of course, he realized that this would be a bad idea- his older brother needed his bed rest after all. So instead he was carrying one of the books August had read to him while he was sick a few years ago. He ran down the stairs, stumbling a bit as he reached the bottom, before catching his balance and standing next to Zhi.
"Sorry momma!"

"Well, I think we'll both be alright for a while. Have fun catching bad guys, doing paperwork and yelling at loose cannon subordinates!"
August noticed that his shirt was missing and decided it was probably being cleaned. Well, at least the bandages mostly covered him up anyway, and his wounds were pretty much closed for now.
"Besides, I think Mom will have things covered here....as long as Qiang doesn't decide jumping on me is suddenly "the bestest idea ever" or something. A shame I won't be able to help him practice swordsmanship for a while..."
He stared at the wall for a minute, contemplating the day ahead with a slight smile on his face.

"Blabberbrother..." Toph chuckled, checking her glove for any problems. "I already told you... I don't do paperwork. I've never really learned how to write. I've got a secretary that does it all for me!"
She laughed, but was interrupted when someone knocked on the door. "Must be Ms. Stabby." Toph said, walking over to August. She gave him a pat on the back and a kind smile. "I'll be back at night. Don't do anything stupid. And here's something to think about: what is the baby's name?" And with that, she walked out of the room, going towards the front door.
Once Toph opened the door, Alicia immediately dashed inside, and placed the basket on the table. "Where is he? Is he safe? Is everything alright? John told me what happened to him yesterday, I couldn't--"
"Calm down, Ms. Stabby." Toph said, raising her hands. "He's fine. He's on that room over there. You should--"
But Alicia didn't listen to the rest of the phrase, as she rushed inside and gasped once she spotted August. "What happened to you?! Why do you have all these bandages? Are you going to be alright?"
"Moooom." said Zhi, who slowly stepped in the room, trying her best to look bored. "You're acting all overprotective again. He's fine, can't you see? Aunt Toph took care of him."
"She did? Well, yes, she did, John told me that, I just... I just had to see it with my own eyes." Alicia said, rolling in her eyes in a sad attempt of brushing off her worry. "I'm sorry, it's just... this never happened to me before. I don't know how to react to seeing my son like that."
"Well, this is going to be great practice for you, Ms. Stabby." Toph said, peeking into the room. "I'll be leaving now. Good luck!" she said, patting Zhi on the head and walking out of the front door. Once the door closed, Alicia pulled up a chair and sat right besides August. "Are you still hurt? Do you want me to do anything? Give you a blanket or something?"
Zhi simply rolled her eyes and sat on the bed, once again trying to look bored. However, August could clearly see that every once in a while, her eyes would dash back to where he was, almost as if she wanted to make sure he was alright.

Qiang walked in, book still in hand, and held the door open. Darwin the Flareon jumped up on the bed and curled up next to August immediately as it had done every night through his childhood. Qiang was petting the Growlithe that sat next to him in the meantime.
