It's a tradition for the school of every world- enough snow, and you're off class for the day. The snow, right now, was up past John's knees. Gaoling was covered in it. And he'd promised August they'd go out and play. He'd made Alicia a pot of tea to keep warm with their new baby, Zhi, and had promised to stay near the house in case of an emergency. John was now making sure August was properly bundled up so he wouldn't catch cold, and stoked the fire one last time before going to give Alicia and Zhi a kiss. Afterward, he put on his red scarf, and crouched down to August. Darwin leaped up into Alicia's lap and curled up, sniffing at Zhi. Spot, meanwhile, began pacing in circles around August's legs.
"Alright son, you ready?"

"Mrphnmhphnumph!" August struggled to reply through the layers of thick clothing. Seeing as he couldn't immediately do so, the small boy settled for jumping up and down excitedly, showing a thumbs-up and then, for reasons that must have been perfectly and obviously clear to himself, waddling around in an imitation of a penguin complete with a muffled noise that sounded sort of close to "wark wark!"
With his odd expression of approval completed, August started tugging John towards the door with his mitten-covered hands, way more than excited at the prospect of playing out in the snow.

John laughed and began following August, spitting a bit as snow blasted him in the face. "Alright, Augy, lead the way!"

August half-waddled half-ran out into the snow, eventually settling for something sort of like walking and sort of like swimming as he pushed his way through the snowdrifts. The boy tried to slide on his belly in further imitation of a penguin but instead he wound up sinking down into a self-made August-shaped hole.
Since he couldn't move through the winter-y wonderland he was surrounded by without considerable if fun difficulties, he settled for rolling onto his back and flailing back and forth to make a snow angel from the little hole, then trying to nudge the snow away from himself to try and make either tunnels or an igloo, though he only had vague ideas for how to make either considering his memories only went about a year or so back.
"Daee! Mrphanmphnah!" he held his arms up above the hole to wave excitedly to John.

John made his way over to August, laughing a bit as he loosened the boy's scarf. He was making sure to keep out of the parts of the forest where the burrowing animals made their holes- didn't want August falling into one with the snow covering them, after all.
"There you go, son. That better?"

"Lots better!" August beamed up and John from behind the scarf and launched himself into a snow-covered hug. So far August loved everything about the snow; how he could shape it into things and play in it and the crunching noise it made when he moved around in it. Well, he loved everything about it but the cold, but he was having too much fun to focus on that right now.
"Daddy! I wanna make a igloo like they have in the south pole like the Water Tribe people make! With big tunnels an' stuff to play in!" The boy was hopping from one foot to the other, practically squirming around from excitement. Though as a troubling thought occured his excited moving slowed
"Umm...we can do that without water-bending, right? 'cause I can't do that..." He stared hard at the snow as he said so, as if maybe by focusing really hard he could shape it to his will after all and maybe move on from igloo-building to making big ice palaces like he'd heard the Northern Water Tribe had by thought alone.
The snow was less than impressed by his efforts.

John hugged August, still laughing as he kneeled down.
"Right! Let's give it a shot then. We'll make a big old snow drift and dig it out from inside!"

"O-kay!~ August tried his best to make his smile was visible through his scarf even though it wasn't muffling him in the extreme anymore. He started trying to push a whole bunch of snow together, saying things like 'beep beep' "vroom" and the occasional growl while generally just having a fun time pretending to be a cross between a polar bear and a bulldozer.
Of course for August 'a whole bunch of snow' was really more of a medium-sized pile of the stuff helped by using the small drift as target practice for snowballs when he got too tired to push and had to rest for a while. After a little bit of work, he stepped back to survey the 'construction' he'd completed, hopping from foot to foot in an attempt to keep the cold out of his toes while staring admiringly at the work-in-progress and resisting the urge to jump in.
After taking a second to look at the size of John and then back at the snowdrift, he frowned behind his scarf.
"Umm...do you think maybe we'll need more snow?"

John had helped August get the snow drift up to a fairly large size and rustled his hair with a smile. "I think we've got enough, Augie."
John began digging out the inside of the igloo, padding what he took off onto the sides. He'd never really made one after all. "So, what do you want for lunch, August? We've still got some of those fox antelope steaks from when we went hunting."

August jumped from one foot to another happily at the thought of fox-antelope steaks. In the cold and snow, a warm meal sounded like the best idea ever.
"Yay yay yay! Fox-Antelope Steaks!" he gave the half-finished igloo a final couple of pats and surveyed it. There would be plenty of time to finish it up later today, and in his eyes it already looked really awesome and pretty. the small boy tilted his head up to look around and then up at the snow and got a far-away look for a second as he took in the whole snowy wonderland.
"Do you think every day could be as nice as this, Daddy?"
He blinked the snowflakes off of his face and eyelashes and grinned behind his scarf "The only thing that'd make it better is hot chocolate!"

John smiled and hugged August. "I hope so August. This is the happiest I've been in a long, long time. And... well, I'm sure I can fix you some hot chocolate with lunch today!"
