In the closing years of the 22nd Century, civilisation was torn apart.
Time followed shortly thereafter.
It was the result of an accident in a nanorobotics lab; an attempt to reach the technological singularity that waited just beyond the horizon year-on-year. Like everything so delicate, there were enormous precautions in place. They forgot just one crucial fact: if their research accomplished that which it was meant to, it would be able to overcome all their protections. It should have been sabotaged like all attempts before it, but the government inspector was too late.
The experiment succeeded and a horde swept across the land.
Society was scoured clean in a matter of days; the world was irrevocably deformed and the population cut down to isolated pockets of civilisation. It was imperfect; some areas were spared and some spots in others were missed. One pattern was constant: the densest collections of knowledge and data were utterly eradicated.
Eventually, the horde turned in on itself and broke up into roving, destructive clouds that weakened with each passing collision, until it was safe to emerge from hiding and try to rebuild; nature and man both. Something was wrong, though: whilst the nanobot clouds could pass through some invisible barriers with ease, people just saw darkness. A few could explain, but they were few and far between.
Time had been altered. In some places it was Earth standard, in others it flowed faster or slower. The largest contiguous timeblock was the Amazon, but that was practically uninhabited. Slowly, each block developed, until the power expended finally gave way after three decades of Earth time.
Now free to explore, those who remember the previous world or who have heard tales of it are seeking out anything to reclaim humanity's lost glory, using the technology they still possess. Some lost almost everything over the course of upwards of a thousand years and became hostile to these remnants, a few joined them when promised a new part in this world. All fear the remaining clouds, and there are rumours of people utterly controlled by the nanobots who desire nothing more than a dead world...
Yup, Rain had an idea!
There's a spectrum of character options, ranging from those with technology freshly made at the time of the great nanobot horde, to those whose only contact with technology beyond bows and spears is unknowingly integrated with themselves (the nanobot possessed people mentioned? These people got the same sort of thing, only much less). So, choice between whatever fun toys you can come up with, or amazing physical talents.
Just remember the second lot tend to not have much of Earth culture left.
I advise you to copy the table itself. >.>
