If GS is getting in on it, why can't I?
The moon danced in the night sky, flitting back and forth to a maddening, spiralling cadence audible only as the voice of the sky itself. The silver body waltzed alone, jerkily retreating from the horizon and into its favoured patterns as the sun rose. The two collided with staccato thunder, shattering into thirteen pieces...
"Get up, already! It's gone one!"
The girl jerked awake, sleepily rubbing her eyes and looking around the room, frowning in confusion as everything refused to come into focus and grabbing her glasses. Ah, yes, she'd moved into the Academy the other day, but they journey had been so long she'd gotten here in the dead of night. And now it seemed she'd missed the first day's classes...
[Okay, two choices. One: uniform choice. I have no ideas, go look yourselves.]
[Two, world style.]
[] Modern Fantasy [] Sci-fi [] Steampunk [] Magipunk (Yeah, think I made that word up... Steampunk + Magitech and lots and lots of magic stuff)

As for the second choice, I couldn't decide between Modern Fantasy and Magipunk, and ended up closing my eyes and pointing.

Now dressed, and with glasses exchanged for contact lenses (how the hell did they make these things?), the girl slunk out of the small, featureless room and... came to a dead halt. To her left, a corridor filled with many identical doors, distinguished only by brass nameplates and the distressed-looking potted plant by one of the unvarnished portals. To her right, a corridor much the same, only lacking the portal. Finally, at the crossroads between, yet more corridors! Trying to think back to her arrival in the dead of night, the girl rushed down past the potted plant, emerging into a cavernous, almost natural seeming chamber with the distinct chuffing sound of a steam engine echoing from its depths. Aside from the dim red glow indicating the source of the sound, there was no other light. [] Head for the steam engine and see if someone's there to ask for directions. [] Go backwards and avoid the creepy room.

Carefully, the girl made her way through the hall, feeling almost like she was trespassing on sacred ground. It had the same hushed atmosphere, the same tremendous feeling of weight; the only difference was the closeness of the machinery. Normally, the mechanical sounds would echo up from the buildings' bowels, if at all.
Ignoring the desire to slow to a reverential crawl, the girl pushed forwards, and came to a dead halt before the largest single piece of machinery she had ever seen. Just one tooth on any of the golden gears she could see was at least twice her size, and the bubbles in the pulsing green fluid--liquid mana, she thought--running in pipes along its sides and into its depths were more than big enough to fit her room.
She was only halfway there, stood at the precipice of a steep cliff with only a moist staircase down to it, and it was already deafening.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" a firm voice asked, emerging from the shadows and making her start. An elderly man, with vermillion robes emblazoned with a silver hammer, had just stepped from behind her without making any noise... somehow, "Powers the whole city. The Academy was built around it."
One golden eye, a gear filled with more of the same pulsing fluid, and one blue one turned a piercing gaze on the girl, "I know that no students are supposed to be visiting for a few weeks, so you're going to have to explain who you are and why you're here."

Making a minor change to my vote, um, since the name Lisbeth is nice and it makes it easier deciding a name, eh-heh.

"Lisbeth Masaki," the girl said nervously, "I got here late last night and couldn't find my way to the Academy proper. I'm sorry for the trouble."
The intimidating glare faded a few steps and the man smiled a little, "There's always one. Come along, I'll walk you to the right lesson. The first day is always the same."
"Won't you get in trouble for abandoning something so important?" she asked curiously, only getting a little smile in reply as she was led out of the huge room and back through all the important looking corridors to an unremarkable looking door.
Expecting the worst, Lisbeth opened it to a cavernous amphitheatre-like room, with only the first two rows actually containing any students. A smaller replica of the titanic engine she'd seen a few minutes earlier was on display.
[] Sneak quietly into the back row and hope you're not noticed. [] Move to the front and pretend nothing's wrong. [] Hope the old man introduces you.
Totally wasn't listening to Masaki Endoh's Power Rangers cover whilst writing this.
