So, um... Basic idea is that this takes place in Japan, in 1856. Very shortly after Japan opened itself up to the rest of the world. This didn't only impact the economic and political climate, but also the supernatural community as well. Magic from the west is entering the east, and magic from the east is entering the west. In the midst of all of this, a small town's legend, a legend that even those aware of the supernatural though to be a simple yokai, may prove to be far more then that...
So, um, yeah, that's the basic idea behind this, um... Here's playable character groups: - Onmyouji: Magical practioners utilizing onmyodo as opposed to western methods of magic. They are similar(magic is passed through bloodlines, they have the same affinities), yet their methods are fundamentally different. Effectively they use the same magic, but with different methods. Onmyouji use ofuda to cast spells, which can be applied to objects or even bodies for a variety of effects. Onmyouji are also adept at preforming exorcisms. The predominant form of magic use in Japan. Onmoyouji also covers people who do not focus on an affinity, but have magical artifacts or are aware of magic, in Japan.
- Yokai: A variety of supernatural creatures dwelling in Japan. These include kitsune, tsukomogami, oni, and many more variants. Their powers and appearances vary greatly. Some yokai have human or very humanoid appearances, (note: Ones played in this RP should be of this kind). Others can shapeshift to take such an appearance(Note: Also acceptable). They are universally possessed of a longer lifespan then most humans(barring things that can cause immortality of lengthen lives).
- Magi: Capable of magic, invoked by spells and symbols, sometimes in conjunction with one another. Magical prowess is passed through bloodlines, some families having more or less mana then others. Magi will have an affinity, which can range from things like fire to gravity to numbers. Affinities(which are also passed through bloodlines) are not limited to the affinity itself, but also includes things that are conceptually linked to it. For example, a mage with an affinity for fire would also excel at spells involving "consumption", "ignition", and "destruction". Magi can preform spells outside their affinity, though it is more difficult to learn. While there was some extremely rare magi in Japan before it opened to the rest of the world, they were incredibly rare. In recent years after the opening of Japan, a few more have appeared, but they remain rare.
- Alchemist: A subtype of magi, alchemists do little to no direct spellcasting. Some are even incapable of doing so for whatever reason. Instead, alchemists create devices utilizing or channeling mana. Alchemists are capable of creating alchemical devices, devices with magical traits. These include such things as the legendary Philosopher's Stone, though that object has been lost to time. Rare in Japan.
- Homunculi: Artificial humans created via a union of raw materials and a soul, homunculi are able to be created to a variety of specifications, from creating an ideal assassin to creating someone with the power to boost abilities. They have personalities and thoughts of their own, and an infinite lifespan. Most homunculi will hit a certain age and cease to age beyond that. Homunculi are NOT common, due to difficulties involved in creating them and the inability to simply create souls meaning some kind of sacrifice must be involved. They are even rarer in Japan, as they are predominantly western in origin.
- Vampires: Rather straightforward, vampires are human in appearance, and must drink blood to survive. They are faster and stronger then humans, and capable of regenerating from any damage that does not destroy either the heart or the brain. The sun weakens them and causes them to fall unconscious, but they will recover when out of the sun. Vampires are frozen at the age they were turned, and cannot die of old age. They have existed in Japan just like they have in many other places, but they were much more rare until it opened to the west.
There is a Masquerade in place, but it is notably looser then it would be in modern times. While large population centers are kept entirely in the dark about the supernatural, some small towns remain aware of it during this time. I should also note that onmyouji and yokai are far more common in Japan, and that the other character groups should have less representation.

Name: Kana Type: Youkai - Kitsune Age: 106 Appearance: Feel free to d'aw.Personality: Infinitely cheerful, friendly, and completely lacking in malice or deceit. Since everything she says is the truth, Kana has the unfortunate habit of inadvertently pointing out things best left unsaid, as well as giving out her true name to strangers. Her friendliness, however, has also helped win over the heart of a shrine maiden, and thus helps out at said shrine. Though the most she does is attract worshippers with her totally-adorable antics and eagerness to be useful. As a side note, her inability to lie even seems to stretch as far as disabling anything related to illusions. Abilities: She has amazing shrine maiden powers. Which involves the ability to sweep shrine grounds and pray at a master level. She can also learn human languages pretty quickly. Weapons/Equipment: None. Unless she's attacked while holding a broom or something. Brief Backstory: Really not much to say about her. Having been born a kitsune six years ago, she did little else other than hang around human villages, quickly learning to speak like a human, it wasn't long before she ended up staying at a shrine. Which she quite enjoys.

Roxas: Accepted. @whitepulse: He's a bit too... blatantly magical. There's a masquerade in this world, so he shouldn't be going around looking like a wizard, basically, eh-heh. - Name: "The Enigmatic Star Watching Girl", prefers Hoshi
- Type: Yokai, though her specific type is unidentified
- Age: Likely older then she appears, though she is physically 17
- Gender: Female
- Appearance: "It is a lovely night, isn't it? We could watch it together."
- Personality: Hoshi is an... odd individual. She is usually a cheerful, enthusiastic presence wherever she goes, but may also slip into sudden bouts of melancholy without much warning. She tends to take notice of odd things, and behave in a peculiar manner. It's frequent that she will abruptly mention something totally unconnected to the current situation, or become distracted by some small detail in the background. She tends to lack focus, except when watching the stars and moon. Her focus becomes an intense one when she watches the stars and moon. Hoshi will ask others to sit with her and watch the stars and moon if they come across her in her star-gazing, but will not be happy if they leave before the night is over. She also becomes quite focused if attacked, or forced to fight.
- Abilities: Hoshi is faster and stronger then she appears, certainly moreso than a human of her appearance would be. Her fighting style is a fast and hard-hitting one, and she is capable of using either her hands, or weapons. She is much weaker during the day, only equivalent to a very strong and fast human being, but she is stronger at night. She also gains access to a specific weapon at night. She is capable of regenerating at all times, but is capable of regenerating much more severe damage at night.
- Weapons/Equipment: Hoshi gains access to the Hoshi no Tsubasa no Ken at night, a silvery and light-weight katana that does not appear to be made of normal metal. It is unbreakable, and very sharp, but otherwise unremarkable.
- Brief Backstory: Rumor has it that, once a month, a certain lake outside of a certain town is visited by a mysterious girl at night. She stands on the shores of the lake an watches the stars. They say that, if you find her, she will ask you to sit with her and watch the stars. They say that, if you watch the stars with her for the whole night, she will forever be your friend, or in some versions, declare she is your wife. But if you refuse her offer, or leave before the night is over, she will never again appear to you. Other versions say she will kill you. Hoshi... well, she certainly watches the stars.

Name | Yamato no Mizuki | Type | Undifferentiated | Age | Unknown. Ancient. | Appearance | Doesn't look Japanese (or much of anything else) and, if she takes the time, can pass for male.
| Personality | Mizuki takes a relaxed approach to things: even the worst of life's troubles are only temporary, so why get so worked up about things? That would be foolish, honestly. She balances out as a nice person, though her tendency to mess with people's heads and tease strangers can obscure it at first.
She seems to do her best to keep from getting too close to people, and is extremely reluctant to talk about her past.
Has a hobby of classifying weapons based on devastation caused and risk to use.
Hates spicy foods and arrogance. | Abilities | - Martial Skills:
- Polearm Fighting: Due to much practice on her part (poles are
pretty much the simplest weapons ever) and work, despite a complete lack of talent, Mizuki is quite capable of beating people around the head with a simple stick, or a naginata. Then she cheated and made her stuff magical. - Wall Running: A benefit of enchanted footwear, this is a simple
ability that's only of much use because she's got ludicrously strong leg muscles. What, you think moving like this is easy just because you stick to the surface?
- Magus Abilities: Affinity of Momentum; her least developed branch
of magic due to the need to cast on the spot. She finds it a lot of trouble to cast exactly when she needs it rather than preparing things vastly in advance, when she wants to do it. Nevertheless, she has a few notable spells.- Reject: Simple spell that sends a colourless blast of energy
at the enemy. Contact either slows them down or pushes them away. Weak but simple: point and fire. - Collapse: Longer casting time than Reject, it's still pretty
quick and can be cast with one hand. A single, large downward thrust onto the target, often causing exactly what the name suggests. - Thrust: Still one-handed, strength depends on casting time.
The damage ranges from a punch to blowing a chunk of the foe's body out of their back, if given a thirty second reprieve to focus on it. - Mass Reject: Two hands required, relatively quick casting time.
Time taken determines range, default of a ten foot area, if given sufficient casting time can knock back an entire army. - Banish: Long casting time, looks like a two-handed ki blast.
Does no damage to the person innately, but sudden acceleration to a hundred miles an hour up and away is a hazard on its own, as is the crazy tumbling it enforces (the spell attempts to ensure landing on one's head.)
- Onmyouji Abilities: Terrible at exorcisms. Amazingly competent at
creating complex spells with ofuda, as well as divining the location of something. She's even worked out how to use ofuda as a storage medium, allowing a stack of charms (coloured purple for ease of recognition) to carry an entire household's worth of objects, one item per ofuda. - Alchemist Abilities: Mizuki's strength. She doesn't use enchanted
items in place of casting; she uses them to further augment it or save her the bother of having to cast individually. Such fun has given rise to her footwear and main weapon, as well as a few homunculi that take the time to guard her descendants. She's close-lipped about her greatest achievement, though her age makes the Philosopher's Stone and Elixir of Life a possibility--if unlikely, as she has no such item on her.
| Weapons/ Equipment
| - Wall-Walking Boots: A misnomer, because they're not actually
boots, and are in fact capable of walking perfectly fine on the ceiling, as well. Very handy, if utterly baffling for most people trying to study them.
- Army-Splitting Naginata Does what it says. Highly lethal to so
much as carry, she only pulls the thing out when there's no-one remotely friendly nearby. Even the slightest movement turns the air ahead into a lethal blade, and an outright swing into a company bisecting beam. Lethal, and utterly festooned with ofuda--half to grant it its amazing abilities, the other half to dampen the sensitivity. Remove the protections and it could do duty as a siege weapon Classification: Devastation: *****, Risk: *****+ (When an accidental swing can bisect a building, you have a problem) - Rejection Staff: Basically a highly-powered, weaponised version of
her Reject spell, Mizuki uses it as her default weapon. If six feet of hickory can't take something down, the sheer fact that blocking it at all will start knocking it backwards is often disorienting enough to set things up for a chain of strikes to buy time for something more dangerous. Classification: Devastation: 0, Risk: *.
| Backstory | Born a vast time ago, the most Mizuki says to people is that she remembers when magic had no classifications, and that's only if they keep pushing her for details. Other than that, she's pretty tight-lipped, though she seems oddly familiar with certain legendary figures. |

Name: Akira Toujou Type: Homonculus Age: 8 Appearance: "You shall behold the true glory of the Swordey Sword School of Swordsmanship with your body."Personality: People who meet Akira Toujou at first could describe her as a bit off, fitting as the homonculus tends to be on a slightly different wavelength from most people. While not quite completely expressionless, it takes people a while to guess what mood she's in at the moment because she shows minute facial movement. Though she's in an adult body, the girl acts like a child sometimes- often asking what something is and how do they work with a shine in her eyes. For some reason she is adamant in calling her swordsmanship the "Swordey Sword School of Swordsmanship" though sometimes she'll instead say "Shinmeiryuu: _____". Abilities: Akira Toujou was made to be strong, and strong she is- able to life a horse over her head without much discomfort. As a guard, the homonculus is also very durable and sturdy so as to be a perfect meat shield. Installed with a fast healing factor, any injury that isn't fatal or severe could be healed within one or two days of being inflicted. Programmed to be capable swordsman, Akira is very good at swinging swords, often one in each hand. Also quite good at cooking and massages, the better to help out her mistress. Weapons/Equipment: Three swords: named Akatsuki, Higure, and Mayonaka. (Dawn, Dusk, and Midnight). They are all extremely and eternally sharp due to Kaede's alchemy helping out. Akira usually switches swords depending on the situation. Brief Backstory: Akira was made by Kaede to be a guard and constant companion, a job that the protective homonculus does with enthusiasm.

Name | Ishikawa Kaede | Type | Hanyou Alchemist (Half Moon Rabbit) | Age | 29 | Appearance | | Personality | Kaede is easily embarrassed and shy, preferring to let her bodyguard get to know people first, before she does herself. This is a large part of the reasoning for her making such a homunculus in the first place: she didn't really have any friends, so she made one, and that was that. Surprisingly lecherous, though it's not something that people are likely to find out. Really likes mochi. | Abilities | Affinity: Creation. Moon Rabbits make mochi, right? Well, somehow this gave her an affinity that, whilst very good for being an alchemist, is pretty hard to make use of as a mage. She actually has a decent amount of power, but without anything she can effectively use... Homunculus Creation. She made Akira and could make more, though she isn't inclined to do so. Spellcraft Butterflies. Delicate clockwork magitech contraptions, they can channel a single element of a spell, and work together to make something more useful. She only has a Fire butterfly and a Sphere butterfly; Kaede lacks the raw material for more. Listed here because they're a way for her to cast spells. Athletic. Half moon rabbit, see? She's especially good at jumping, but all forms of athletic ability are represented, including flexibility. However, jumping needs special note: she can jump faster than she can run, and scaling Mt. Fuji wouldn't take her too long. Kaede jump good. Curse of Instability. Human and youkai don't mix perfectly, after all, and she's got a minor curse as a result: Kaede + footwear = inability to go more than a dozen steps without collapsing. | Weapons/ Equipment | Akira. Her butterflies. That umbrella. A surprising amount of money, but she's not really sure how to make the best use of it. Travelling is more fun. | Backstory | Kaede's mother was from the moon, and ended up heading home when her daughter reached adulthood, asking her to come up there when she works out how to do so... or if she learns to jump that well. It was only a few years later that her father passed away and she made Akira, as well as beginning to design her Spellcraft Butterflies. Not wanting to stay home any more, and wanting examples of western magic to copy, she's taken to wandering. Despite her affinity, Kaede has no experience with mages; natural talent and some tips from her mother are all she has to go on. |

Name: Iwajima no Jun'ichi Type: Onmyouji Age: 14 Appearance: will find one shortly Personality: Jun'ichi is fairly curious about the wider world, having thus far been raised primarily by his clan to become a first-rate onmyouji in borderline isolation. This means he can be a bit of a ditz about common knowledge and social conventions, and even though his technical knowledge of customs, Youkai, and Eastern and Western magics is quite extensive, he generally lacks practical experience. Nevertheless he has a good heart and a strong sense of justice, though he has some slightly...unusual ideas regarding Youkai in the opinion of his family: namely that they can peaceably coexist with humans. Abilities: Jun'ichi is a prodigy with Onmyoudo and has the numeral Affinity of '1' that is rare even among the Iwajima's Onmyouji. This lets him use any spell he likes as long as it's connected to 1, sometimes in a straightforward sense but also conceptually. The usual concepts for 1 are Isolation, Unity or Wholeness and Singularity (thankfully not the Black Hole kind). Weapons/Equipment: Jun'ichi is currently disguised as a wandering beggar as he journeys the land to learn about its peoples and youkai, and as such doesn't have much on him aside from several already prepared Ofuda, ink, paper and a brush. In addition he was given a Shakujo to defend himself with, though as his only has one ring, it's fairly useless for actual begging. Brief Backstory: Jun'ichi is the future head of the Iwajima family, a famous clan of Onmyouji dedicated to protecting the people of Japan from rogue youkai, gods and magic users. As such, he was raised in near isolation and trained to be highly skilled in Onmyoudo. However, no matter how many fearsome stories he was told of the evils of Youkai, he continued to believe that they must not be as bad as his family claimed. Thus, both as tradition demanded and as an attempt at teaching him a lesson, his family cast him out into the wider world dressed as a begging monk with no proof of his true identity, so that he could learn the hearts and minds of common people and Youkai as well as gain experience in the world.
